Jordan and Syria agreed to take joint steps to elevate relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and advance cooperation in various areas. The agreement was set out in a joint statement issued after Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi's talks in Damascus on Wednesday.
Safadi was received by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the People's Palace and held extensive talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. The Jordanian minister conveyed the greetings of Jordan's King Abdullah II to al-Sharaa and said that his country stood with Syria. Al-Sharaa also sent his greetings to the Jordanian king and emphasized the determination to expand the fraternal ties between the two countries into broader areas of cooperation.
Economic areas of partnership
Safadi and al-Shaibani said progress in relations should continue with the aim of reaching a comprehensive strategic partnership. Trade, investment, transport, customs, water and energy were identified as priority areas for cooperation.
The ministers also discussed implementing the decisions adopted at the second meeting of the High Coordination Council, held in Amman in April, and turning the agreements reached into concrete steps. The council's third meeting is planned to take place in Damascus in October.
Thirty ministers and officials representing more than 20 sectors from the two countries attended the second meeting in Amman, where 10 memorandums of understanding and cooperation agreements were signed.
Syria's unity and the Sweida road map
Jordan said it supported rebuilding Syria on foundations that would preserve its unity, sovereignty, security, stability and territorial integrity. Safadi said Syria's security and stability formed the basis for the security and stability of the region.
Safadi also welcomed the announcement regarding the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces and their integration into the institutions of the Syrian army. He said the step would strengthen Syria's unity, security and stability.
On the issue of Sweida, the sides assessed efforts to implement the joint road map agreed by Jordan, Syria and the United States. Adopted on September 16, 2025, the road map provides for security, humanitarian aid, public services, justice and social reconciliation, as well as a joint mechanism to monitor implementation.
Joint condemnation of Israeli attacks
Jordan and Syria condemned repeated Israeli attacks and violations targeting Syrian territory. The joint statement said these actions violated Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity and contravened the obligations under the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement.
The sides warned of the consequences that continued attacks would have for Syria and the region. They called on Israel to withdraw from the Syrian territories it occupies and to respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Message of solidarity with Jordan and Arab countries
The two countries agreed to maintain coordination and consultation on regional issues and to support efforts to end tensions and restore calm.
Jordan and Syria also condemned Iran's attacks against Jordan and other Arab countries. The sides expressed their full solidarity with these countries, while al-Shaibani said Syria stood with the steps taken by Jordan and the other Arab countries to protect their territories, sovereignty and security.
At the end of the talks, the ministers decided to continue consultations and coordination among the relevant institutions to follow up on the areas of cooperation and implement the agreements reached.
