Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the Arab League Council’s decision to lift the political, economic and social sanctions imposed on the Syrian state and its institutions.
The ministry described the decision as “historic,” saying it represented an important step toward strengthening joint Arab action and putting the process back on track.
The statement said the decision would strengthen mutual support for Syria’s economic recovery, reconstruction and efforts to achieve stability.
Restrictions on former regime officials will remain
The decision covers measures imposed by Arab League institutions, bodies and joint Arab working mechanisms. However, the Council maintained the travel ban and asset-freezing measures imposed on former regime officials.
The Arab League Council adopted the decision at its 166th regular ministerial meeting, held on September 7. The Economic and Social Council will be responsible for monitoring its implementation.
Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its appreciation for the efforts and constructive approach that contributed to the decision. The ministry said it would continue cooperation with the Arab League in line with the shared interests of the region and its peoples.
Sanctions were imposed in November 2011
The Arab League imposed the sanctions on Syria’s then-government in November 2011, citing the suppression of protests in Syria and the failure to implement an Arab plan aimed at ending the violence.
The measures included suspending transactions with the Central Bank of Syria, freezing government assets and suspending intergovernmental trade exchanges, except for strategic goods.
