Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam assessed ways to support Lebanon’s reconstruction and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
The Lebanese Council of Ministers said discussions on Monday covered developments in the region, as well as increasing mutual support and cooperation. Joint work in the energy and electricity sectors was also among the main agenda items.
The meeting also addressed providing support to the Lebanese army and strengthening its capabilities. Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji and Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Saleh Al Khulaifi attended the meeting.
Lebanese Prime Minister Salam thanked Qatar for standing by Lebanon. The two sides focused on developing their economic and investment partnership and supporting Lebanon’s recovery and reconstruction.
The economic toll of the war in Lebanon
According to World Bank estimates, the first war, which began on October 8, 2023, caused approximately $14 billion in economic losses in Lebanon. The economic cost of the latest attacks, which began on March 2, 2026, was estimated at between $4 billion and $5 billion.
Lebanese authorities said at least 4,386 people had been killed, 12,407 wounded and more than 1 million displaced in the attacks that have continued since March 2, 2026.
Call to de-escalate regional tensions
The two sides stressed the need to intensify efforts to reduce tensions and preserve the security and stability of the Gulf countries and the region. Preventing new conflicts was also one of the main issues discussed.
The meeting between Lebanon and Qatar took place as tensions between Iran and the United States continued. The United States and Iran have been carrying out reciprocal military attacks after negotiations stalled over disputes concerning maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which is strategically important for energy and trade.
Thousands of people were killed in the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, 2026. Iran responded by carrying out attacks on Israel and U.S. targets in countries across the region.
