A fire broke out at the government hospital in the town of Mays al-Jabal in southern Lebanon. Lebanon's official news agency NNA reported that Israeli soldiers had started the fire. Images showing heavy smoke rising from the hospital were shared on social media.
Commenting on Mays al-Jabal Government Hospital, located in the Israeli-occupied town along the border, Lebanon's Health Ministry condemned the setting of the building on fire in the strongest terms.
The ministry said the Israeli army had previously stationed forces at the hospital and converted the building into a military barracks. It argued that the complete burning of the hospital aimed to deprive people living in southern Lebanon of healthcare services.
Lebanon's Health Ministry called on the international community, the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross not to remain silent. The ministry also called for accountability over Israel's attacks on Lebanon's healthcare sector.
Targeting medical facilities and healthcare workers constitutes, in all its elements, a war crime and a blatant violation of international conventions.
Attacks and ceasefire in Lebanon
Dozens of towns in southern Lebanon were occupied after the Israeli army launched intensive airstrikes on Lebanon on March 2. The Lebanese government said the number of people displaced by the attacks had exceeded 1 million.
The ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, which took effect on April 17, was later extended several times. Lebanon's Health Ministry said at least 4,386 people had been killed in attacks carried out since March 2.
A framework agreement was signed between Lebanon and Israel on June 26, following the fifth round of direct talks held in Washington.
