Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaydi and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq, regional security and efforts to develop the economic partnership between the two countries during a phone call.
The two sides assessed joint efforts to ease tensions in light of developments in the region and strengthen security and stability. They also discussed economic and investment cooperation, as well as opportunities for French companies to invest in Iraq.
Baghdad stresses sovereignty and dialogue
Ali Falih al-Zaydi highlighted the importance of relations between Iraq and France and invited Macron to visit Iraq. He said the two countries should work together to establish a sustainable economic and investment partnership that would serve their common interests.
Zaydi said the Iraqi government aimed to strengthen stability and transform the country into an economically and politically influential power at the regional level. He drew attention to Iraq’s natural resources and its strategic location connecting the country to international trade routes. He said they attached importance to establishing balanced relations with neighboring countries.
Zaydi said they would not allow Iraqi territory to be used in a way that would threaten the security of neighboring countries. He said they would protect Iraq’s security, sovereignty and the interests of its people, and underscored the importance of dialogue in resolving regional and international problems.
September 30 set as deadline for coalition withdrawal
Recalling that September 30 was the deadline for the withdrawal of international coalition forces from Iraq, Zaydi said the coalition’s completion of its mission would allow the country to focus more on reconstruction and development. He said the step would contribute to strengthening economic growth and improving the welfare of the people.
Macron said he appreciated the steps taken by the Iraqi government. He announced that France would continue supporting efforts to combat corruption and advance economic reforms, and said his country was ready to support Iraq in the fight against terrorism and help strengthen the capacity of the Iraqi armed forces.
