Morocco’s King Mohammed VI said any attack against Saudi Arabia would be considered an attack against Morocco. Mohammed VI condemned the attacks by Yemen’s Houthis against Saudi Arabia.
The Moroccan king sent a telegram to Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The messages stressed that the security and stability of Saudi Arabia and the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council could not be considered separate from Morocco’s security.
Morocco backs Riyadh
Mohammed VI said protecting the vital interests of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries meant defending shared strategic interests. He said Morocco stood with Riyadh in the face of developments threatening the kingdom’s security and stability.
Attacks targeting civilian and economic facilities, critical infrastructure, cities and residential areas in Saudi Arabia heightened the Moroccan king’s deep concern. Mohammed VI said reports of an attempted attack targeting Mecca had increased concerns and intensified reactions.
Call for international sanctions over Mecca
Mohammed VI said attempts to target Mecca constituted a violation of Muslim holy sites and the feelings of more than 1.8 billion Muslims around the world.
The Moroccan king held the Houthis responsible for the attacks, along with those he said supported them, provided them with financing or supplied them with weapons. He called for international sanctions against those responsible.
Mohammed VI said the continuation of the attacks violated international law. He said the attacks ran counter to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216 of 2015 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 of 2024 concerning attacks on maritime shipping.
Fighting continues in Yemen
Fighting between Yemen’s government forces and the Iran-backed Houthis has intensified since July. The Houthis claim that Saudi Arabia has attacked them and periodically launch ballistic missile and drone attacks against Saudi territory.
