Democratic U.S. Senator Murphy voiced criticism of the Trump administration on an NBC News program following the war that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Murphy argued that a possible deal with Iran would involve paying the government in Tehran $100 billion annually in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Murphy criticizes the Trump administration over the war
Arguing that Donald Trump had lost the war, Murphy said the United States was now in a weaker position while Iran had become stronger. He said the cost of reopening the Strait of Hormuz was rising every day.
Murphy argued that the money would amount to a victory for Iran and said the government in Tehran could use the funds to support its military and proxy forces in the region.
Attacks on Iran must end
Murphy said the attacks on Iran must end and stated that the United States had been weakened in the process. He said he was prepared to support a bad deal to reopen the strait and end the war, arguing that it was the only deal currently available.
Murphy said he would not support funding to replenish the U.S. munitions stockpile so that the attacks could continue. He added that he was prepared to work on replacing the munitions used if an agreement was reached with Iran and the attacks ended.
