The World Union of Muslim Scholars described the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement signed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan as an important step toward the unity and independence of the Islamic world. The union said the agreement would strengthen the Muslim community's capacity to confront common threats.
In its written statement, the union cited verses from the Quran encouraging unity and solidarity. It said that signing the agreement in Mecca on August 7, in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque, carried profound spiritual and symbolic significance.
The agreement's scope should be expanded
Calling for the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement not to be limited to military and security matters, the union urged the parties to turn the accord into institutional cooperation in the political, economic, social, scientific and development fields.
The statement said the coming together of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan carried strategic weight. It highlighted Saudi Arabia's religious, historical, political and economic influence; Türkiye's political, military, industrial and economic strength; and Pakistan's military capabilities and strategic position.
The union said joint action by the three countries could form a solid core for strengthening unity and cooperation across the Islamic world.
Call for Palestine and Al-Aqsa Mosque
The statement called for the initiative not to remain limited to Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. It urged other Muslim countries that support the fundamental issues of the Islamic world, particularly the Palestinian cause and the protection of Al-Aqsa Mosque, to join the process.
The World Union of Muslim Scholars called on the leaders, scholars and institutions of Islamic countries to make use of the opportunities presented by the agreement. The union said integration should be pursued in line with common interests and that peace, security and cooperation in the Islamic world should be strengthened.
