Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was hospitalized in Zanjan due to a heart attack she suffered in prison and a serious deterioration in her health condition. The Narges Mohammadi Foundation, managed by her family, announced that the activist lost consciousness twice and experienced a severe heart attack. As the prison doctors could not manage the situation on site, Mohammadi's condition became critical and she was urgently transferred to the hospital.
The Secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed concern about the worsening health condition of Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and called on the Iranian authorities for her immediate release. Mohammadi had been sentenced to prison for her struggle for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty. The activist had previously undergone angioplasty three times, and her family describes her health condition as a direct and urgent threat to her right to life.
According to the foundation's statement, after Mohammadi fainted following complaints of high blood pressure and severe nausea, emergency fluid treatment was administered in the prison health unit. Her family demands that all charges be dropped and that the sentences given for peaceful human rights work be annulled.
