A fire broke out aboard the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged merchant vessel CAPE DAO off Oman’s Musandam Governorate, on the coast of the Strait of Hormuz. One crew member died in the incident.
The Oman Maritime Security Centre said the vessel was 2.5 nautical miles from the governorate’s coast and that the fire started in the engine room.
The Royal Navy of Oman coordinated with the relevant authorities to evacuate the crew from the vessel. The 27 people who were evacuated received the necessary medical assistance.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations also reported that a cargo ship had come under fire in the Strait of Hormuz. No information was provided on who carried out the attack.
Iran, meanwhile, announced that it would attack vessels “illegally passing” through the Strait of Hormuz.
