Lebanese Prime Minister Salam made an important statement on the role of the army amid ongoing Israeli attacks and the displacement of over one million people within the country. In his message shared on social media on the occasion of Army Day on August 1, he stressed that restoring Lebanon's sovereignty and establishing stability depend on the full deployment of the armed forces across the country.
Salam stated, “Restoring our sovereignty, ensuring stability in our country, and securing the safety of our children depend on the full deployment of our armed forces across our entire country and on establishing state authority on all our territories from Naqoura in the south to Arida in the north.”
The Prime Minister added that they will increase the number of personnel, improve equipment, and enhance personnel conditions in order to strengthen the Lebanese army.
This call comes in the shadow of the intensive airstrikes that Israel launched on March 2. The Lebanese government had announced that the number of displaced people due to these attacks has exceeded one million. Despite a temporary ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and has been extended several times, Israel continues its attacks in various regions.
According to the latest statement from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, 4,333 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since March 2. Although a framework agreement was signed in Washington on June 26 following negotiations, tensions in the region persist.
