Qatar condemned Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz’s entry into the buffer zone in southern Syria, describing the move as an overt attack on Syria’s sovereignty and a serious violation of international law.
In a statement following Katz’s entry into the buffer zone, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said Israel’s move posed a serious threat to regional security. The ministry also condemned the crossing of the international border.
Qatar calls on the international community to act
The ministry called on the international community to take urgent action to ensure that Israel complies with international law and relevant resolutions. It specifically called for adherence to the Disengagement of Forces Agreement signed in 1974 and an end to repeated attacks on Syrian territory.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said these steps were necessary to prevent further tension and escalation in the region, and reiterated its full support for Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
Katz’s statement on Mount Hermon
During his entry into the buffer zone, Israel Katz said Israel would not withdraw from Mount Hermon and the security zone as long as jihadist threats against Israel continued.
Background to developments in Syria
In late 2025, the Israeli army took control of a Syrian buffer zone, while the administration in Damascus described the move as a violation of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement.
Israel has held most of the Golan Heights since 1967. After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024, Israel announced that the Disengagement of Forces Agreement had collapsed and took control of the Syrian buffer zone and several locations. These included the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
Israel has also made advances almost daily in southern Syria, particularly in rural areas of Daraa and Quneitra governorates, carried out detentions, established checkpoints and searched pedestrians.
