The Associated Press announced that Democratic surgeon Adam Hamawy, who is of Egyptian descent, won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Jersey’s 12th congressional district. After taking the oath of office, he will become the first Muslim to represent the state in Congress, Anadolu Agency and Al-Monitor reported.
Hamawy defeated his Republican rival, Greg Mele, receiving 70.8% of the vote after 80% of the ballots had been counted. Hamawy is a former U.S. Army surgeon and based part of his campaign on his experience treating patients in conflict zones, including Gaza, where he participated in medical missions organized by the Palestinian American Medical Association in coordination with the World Health Organization in 2024 and 2025.
Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib, who is of Palestinian descent, was also reelected in Michigan, as was Muslim Representative André Carson in Indiana, Anadolu Agency reported.

The results came in elections in which the Democratic Party won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, delivering a strong rebuke to President Donald Trump and his policies, including the war with Iran.
