The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait discussed ways to reduce regional tension after Kuwait announced it had destroyed Iranian-made drones.
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan held a phone call on Saturday with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah. According to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry, the two ministers discussed the latest developments in the region.
The statement underscored the importance of maintaining consultation and coordination, and noted that the two ministers agreed to step up diplomatic efforts to reduce tension, protect freedom of navigation, and support regional security and stability.
The call came hours after Kuwait announced it had destroyed Iranian drones that violated its airspace and damaged a state facility and civilian vehicles. Kuwaiti officials reported no casualties.
Over the past 13 days, the US and Iran have exchanged military attacks. Washington launched airstrikes on targets inside Iran until July 24, while Tehran claimed it targeted "American military installations and equipment" in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
This escalation comes after the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and negotiations, signed on June 18, were disrupted by disputes over navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz. Security concerns in the strait, vital for global energy supply and trade, remain at the center of diplomatic efforts.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched a military attack on Iran. Iran claimed more than 3,000 people were killed in the attack and that its retaliation resulted in the deaths of American and Israeli soldiers.
