The number of Afghans who have returned to Afghanistan in less than the past three years has reached 6 million. The UN Refugee Agency said a return movement on this scale had not been seen in recent history.
The agency stressed that all returns of Afghan refugees must take place voluntarily, safely and with dignity.
Returns from Iran and Pakistan
A significant share of the Afghans who returned are believed to have been sent back from neighboring Iran and Pakistan.
According to UN figures, approximately 2.1 million Afghans have returned to their country from Iran since the beginning of 2025.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in June that more than 2.4 million Afghan nationals had returned to their country since Islamabad began implementing a phased repatriation program in September 2023.
Afghan refugees remaining in Pakistan
Pakistan has hosted millions of Afghans who fled their country after the 1979 Soviet invasion, as well as refugees who escaped conflict and instability in subsequent years.
The UN's latest figures show that more than 777,000 registered Afghan refugees remain in Pakistan. The number of undocumented Afghans is estimated to exceed 1 million.
