Some remains were recovered nearly three years later from the rubble of a building where people had sought shelter during Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. The recovered remains are to be buried in a joint funeral ceremony next week.
Muhammad Abu Dan, head of the Civil Defense Directorate’s Martyrs’ Remains Recovery Project, said search efforts had been ongoing for three days. Dan said more than 60 people had sought refuge in the building after fleeing the attacks.
Search efforts continue amid a lack of equipment
Civil Defense teams said efforts to reach the remains under the rubble were being carried out with great difficulty because of a lack of equipment. The teams requested support from international institutions and organizations to recover the remains.
An estimated 1,072 bodies remain under the rubble of 147 buildings destroyed in attacks in the northern and central parts of the Gaza Strip. Search efforts are continuing in these areas.
About 333 bodies recovered in the first phase
During the first phase of operations launched by Civil Defense teams at the end of November 2025, about 333 of the 559 missing bodies trapped under the rubble were recovered.
The Gaza government’s Media Office announced in October 2025 that the number of missing Palestinians had reached 9,500 since the attacks began. The statement said the figure included people whose bodies remained under the rubble and people whose fate was unknown.
