Sudan’s army said it recaptured the town of Sodari in North Kordofan state from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Friday, September 25, after heavy fighting.
In a statement, the army said its troops and allied forces entered the town and inflicted heavy losses on the RSF in personnel and equipment. The RSF did not immediately comment on the announcement.
Sodari lies in northwestern North Kordofan on routes linking the state with North Darfur and West Kordofan, and its importance stems from its position on supply and troop movement lines toward Darfur.
Last week the army said it had retaken 11 areas in North Kordofan and was advancing toward Sodari, Hamrat al-Sheikh and Al-Mazroub. The push is part of a broader offensive launched in late July, when the army seized the export road linking the state capital El Obeid to Khartoum, along with towns including Bara.
Sudan’s government accuses the United Arab Emirates of backing the RSF, a charge Abu Dhabi denies. The war between the army and the RSF has been raging since April 2023.
