Syria's Ministry of Energy announced an agreement with Saudi Meters Company for the supply and installation of five million prepaid smart water meters. The ministry stated that the company was selected based on criteria including experience, technology, production capacity, installation expertise, and price.
The agreement's duration was set at five years, linked to production volumes, the readiness of infrastructure for installation, and the company's assembly capacity. The ministry also reported that the readiness of water networks and communication systems is among the factors affecting the timeline.
Initial installations to begin in 2026
According to the ministry's statement, the installation of 300,000 meters is planned for 2026. The rollout will begin in selected provinces based on specific criteria and will then be expanded in phases.
Officials stated that the five million meters procured under the contract will exceed the current number of subscribers, noting that expected population growth was also factored into the planning.
Ultrasonic technology and digital tracking
The meters to be installed will operate with ultrasonic technology and will be equipped with an advanced digital tracking system. This system will allow for instantaneous and accurate consumption readings.
The ministry emphasized that prepaid smart meters are a fundamental part of the program to modernize the measurement and control system. The statement noted that this step will contribute to a fairer distribution of water, increased operational efficiency, and strengthened sustainability of water resources.
Ministry and company management assess the agreement
Syria's Minister of Energy, Muhammed al-Bashir, described the agreement as a critical threshold on the path to modernizing the water sector. Al-Bashir said smart meters offer the ability to reduce losses, improve billing processes, ease paperwork burdens, monitor the network in real time, and respond to malfunctions more quickly.
The agreement was signed on behalf of Syria's General Establishment for Drinking Water and Sewerage by General Manager Tahir al-Omar, and on behalf of the company by its board chairman, Turki al-Amri.
