The Syrian authorities launched a security operation on Thursday targeting a Daesh-linked cell in Rankous, west of Damascus.
The Internal Security Forces, affiliated with the Interior Ministry, said the operation was being conducted in coordination with the General Intelligence Service.
Biruni accused of Homs attacks
The operation followed an investigation into Khalid Raid Biruni, who was arrested on October 6 in the town of Hujayra in the Damascus countryside. The Interior Ministry said Biruni was Daesh's top military commander in its self-declared "Homs Province."
The ministry accused Biruni of planning and directing numerous attacks in Homs. It alleged that Biruni was responsible for preparing and using explosives, as well as organizing sectarian attacks.

The Interior Ministry also linked Biruni to the December 2025 bombing at the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in Homs's Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood. The Health Ministry said eight people were killed and 18 wounded when an explosive device detonated inside the mosque during Friday prayers.
Security operations continue in Syria
Since the Bashar al-Assad regime ended on December 8, 2024, Syrian authorities have been conducting operations against wanted individuals and armed groups to restore security and place weapons under state control.
The operations aim to prevent attacks on civilians and security personnel and stabilize the security situation in the country.
