The Syrian government responded with an official statement to the circulating claims regarding the price of bread, one of the country's staple foods. The Ministry of Economy and Industry categorically denied reports that the price of subsidized bread would rise to 6,000 lira.
Hasan al-Ahmed, Director of the Ministry's Media Department, told the Syrian official news agency SANA, "The price of a bundle of subsidized bread is still 4,000 old Syrian lira, which is equivalent to 40 new Syrian lira." Ahmed stated that work continues at the current price and urged citizens not to heed rumors.
The ministry had previously reduced the number of loaves in a bread bundle from 10 to 8 on June 15, citing increased production costs, but did not change the bundle's weight or price. Hasan al-Ahmed had stated that this adjustment eased the burden on bakeries while preserving citizens' access.
Bread production, which is critically important for food security in Syria, is managed by the Syrian Bread Corporation. The corporation processes approximately 4,500 tons of flour daily across 1,693 bakeries nationwide, producing 4.4 million bundles of bread. Flour distribution is carried out in cooperation with the Grain Corporation, covering all bakeries.
