Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted the significance of his two-day visit to Syria, saying the region was going through a critical period. On the first day of his visit, Fidan was received by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and also held talks with Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
Fidan said the talks reaffirmed the shared commitment to preserving Syria’s unity and territorial integrity and ensuring peace and prosperity for the Syrian people. The preparations for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s planned visit to Damascus were also discussed.
Meeting with Syrian Turkmen
On the second day of his visit, Fidan met with representatives of Syria’s Turkmen community and said the Turkmen were an integral part of Syria.
Fidan said Syrian Turkmen had played an important role in the success of the struggle against the Baathist regime. He said the Turkmen continued to contribute to efforts to transform Syria into a stable and prosperous state.
Visiting historic sites in Damascus
In Damascus, Fidan visited the tombs of Ibn Arabi, Mawlana Khalid al-Baghdadi and Saladin. As part of his program, he also visited the Turkish Air Martyrs’ Cemetery and the Suleymaniye Complex.
Fidan said they observed that the streets of Damascus had begun to regain their calm and activity during the two-day visit. He added that Türkiye welcomed the Syrian people’s efforts to build, through their own will, a safe, stable and prosperous country that embraces all segments of society.
Fidan said Türkiye would continue to stand by Syria throughout this process.
