The 8th Turkish-Arab Artists Gathering, aimed at strengthening cultural ties between Turkey and the Arab world, has begun in Istanbul. The two-day event, held at Rami Library, is organized by the Turkish-Arab Friendship Association and the Turkish-Arab Art House in cooperation with Gaziosmanpaşa Municipality.
Held under the slogan "Colors paint stories", the gathering features painting, calligraphy and handicraft exhibitions as well as artist talks, cultural performances and music recitals. In his opening speech, Turkish-Arab Friendship Association President Metin Turan said that art is a universal bridge transcending language, religion and nationality, adding, "We aim to strengthen this bridge between Turkey and the Arab world." Turan stated that bringing together artists who came to Turkey after the Arab Spring is also among the goals.
Rami Library Director Ali Çelik, on his part, said, "Turks and Arabs are not two separate peoples; they are the two foremost founding elements of Islamic civilization. There is a great need for initiatives to strengthen communication and friendship between us, and artists play a key role in this dialogue."
Alongside Turkey, artists from Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, Palestine, Kuwait, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and Oman are participating in the event. Speaking on behalf of Turkish artists, illumination artist Zeynep Sihoun said she joined with her work titled "Kaaba Door Curtain" and has been practicing traditional arts for 21 years. The opening was also attended by President of the Tunisian Plastic Arts Association Latifa Mohammed Celasi.
