A memorandum of understanding was signed between Türkiye and Egypt to enhance cooperation in the use of international transport corridors.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that he signed the agreement after meeting with Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir on the margins of the 5th Turkish Maritime Summit in Istanbul.
In a statement on X, Minister Uraloğlu said: “With this memorandum, we will take joint steps to increase the efficient use of international transport corridors, primarily the Middle Corridor and the Development Road. We will also strengthen transit transport.”
Middle Corridor and Development Road
The Middle Corridor connects China to Europe via Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye. The route, consisting of 4,256 kilometers of road and rail and 508 kilometers of sea route, reduces delivery times between Europe and Asia to 15 days, turning Türkiye into a trade backbone that directly links 21 countries.
The Development Road, starting from Iraq and extending to Türkiye and its ports, stands out as a 1,200-kilometer road and rail project. This line aims to connect Türkiye to Iraq and the Persian Gulf as one of the shortest routes between Gulf countries and Europe.
Under the memorandum, it was also decided to develop Ro-Ro lines that transport road vehicles by sea, ease shipping operations and boost passenger and cargo mobility.
Maritime Talks with Somalia
Uraloğlu also met with Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur during the summit, saying: “We discussed how to further develop the strong friendship established under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in line with our common goals in maritime and port affairs.”
