Türkiye's Ministry of National Defence announced that the Kalkan vertical takeoff and landing drone, stationed aboard the TCG Gelibolu frigate operating as part of Türkiye's Maritime Task Group in Somalia, conducted its first flight tests in ocean conditions in the Indian Ocean. The ministry also released images from the tests.
Kalkan had previously flown from the TCG Anadolu and TCG Burgazada, but this time it was tested in different maritime conditions in the ocean.

Developed by Baykar, the drone takes off vertically using four electric motors and then transitions to horizontal flight with an internal combustion engine. This enables it to take off and land from a ship's deck without the need for a runway.
The drone can remain airborne for six hours. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 78 kilograms and a payload capacity of 3 kilograms, and carries an electro-optical and infrared camera as well as a laser rangefinder. Its communications range exceeds 70 kilometers.
