Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek assessed the country's latest debt data, saying that lower debt levels are an important factor strengthening the resilience of the Turkish economy and its ability to withstand global economic challenges and disruptions.
Şimşek said the combined debt of Türkiye's public, financial and private sectors and households equals 91% of national income.
He noted that this ratio is far below international levels. Total debt averages around 229% of national income in emerging economies, while the global average stands at 306%.
Şimşek also addressed Türkiye's public debt, saying that the public debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 23.1% in the first quarter of 2026, reaching a historic low.
Regarding external debt, Şimşek said Türkiye's total external debt stock stood at $539 billion in the second quarter.
He added that the ratio of total external debt to national income is expected to remain broadly stable at 31.8%.
The Treasury and Finance minister said that lower debt levels compared with global averages give the Turkish economy greater room to maneuver in the face of difficult global economic conditions and external risks.
Şimşek stressed that lower debt is an important factor in strengthening the Turkish economy's resilience, saying that this position gives Türkiye considerable flexibility in dealing with global economic challenges.
