The foreign ministers of Mauritania and Pakistan, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzouk and Muhammad Ishaq Dar, held a phone call on Wednesday to discuss relations between the two countries and international issues of common interest.
Merzouk said in a statement on Facebook that the talks focused on deepening the fraternal ties and close cooperation between the two countries. The ministers also exchanged views on current international issues and matters of common interest.
The Mauritanian foreign minister had also held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi about a week earlier. That discussion addressed regional developments and efforts to strengthen relations between Mauritania and Iran.
In a statement on the call between Araghchi and Merzouk, the Iranian Embassy in Nouakchott said diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in the region had been assessed. The embassy said the two sides had reaffirmed their willingness to develop bilateral cooperation.
The Iranian Embassy also said Qatar and Pakistan were mediating efforts to reach a final agreement between Washington and Tehran. The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on June 18, but implementation stalled because of disagreements over the strait's security.
