The killing of a civilian by Israeli forces in Syria’s southern Daraa province was condemned by Claudio Cordone, the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria. Cordone called on Israel to fully respect Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law, and offered his condolences to the victim’s family.
Shot in Jamlah village
Muath Salama al-Baeer was shot and killed on Thursday during an Israeli military operation in Jamlah village, west of Daraa.
A relative of al-Baeer said the civilian, who was hearing-impaired, could not respond to Israeli soldiers’ orders to stop.
The Israeli army said its soldiers opened fire on a person approaching them who had ignored warnings. The army said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Israel’s activities in southern Syria
The incident in Jamlah occurred during ongoing Israeli military operations in the Daraa and Quneitra provinces.
Syrian media reported earlier in the week that Israeli forces had entered some villages in Quneitra, raided a home and conducted military activities near civilian settlements.
After the government of Bashar al-Assad fell in December 2024, Israel expanded its military presence in southern Syria. Israel also occupied the buffer zone established under the 1974 disengagement agreement and monitored by the UN.
The Damascus administration described Israel’s actions in Syrian territory as violations of sovereignty and repeatedly called for Israeli forces to withdraw.
