Support for the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights was reaffirmed at a UN Security Council meeting on Syria. The Council also reiterated its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.
Aglaia Balta, Greece’s permanent representative to the UN and president of the Council for the current term, issued a statement on behalf of the Council after UNDOF’s activities were discussed.
Call to uphold the 1974 agreement
Council members called for the full implementation of the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement between Syria and Israel. They said the agreement must be respected, while the safety of UNDOF personnel and the mission’s freedom of movement must also be protected.
The statement called on all states to respect the principles of Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.

UNDOF’s mission in the Golan Heights
The UN Security Council established UNDOF through Resolution 350, adopted on May 31, 1974. The peacekeeping mission monitors the ceasefire in the Golan Heights and the implementation of the Agreement on Disengagement.
Israel has controlled most of the Syrian Golan Heights since 1967. After announcing that the 1974 agreement had collapsed following the end of Bashar al-Assad’s rule in Syria on December 8, 2024, Israel established control over several areas, including the buffer zone and the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, Israeli forces conducted at least 453 ground operations in Syria between December 8, 2024, and October 6, 2026, and at least 69 people were killed.
