Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson accused Tehran of seeking to influence the Nov. 3 U.S. midterm elections by damaging President Donald Trump, in an interview with CBS News.
According to Johnson, the Iranians are following the election process closely because they want to harm the president’s political future, which he described as an important factor. He added that a very different phase would begin after the election.
Johnson gave no details about the nature of that phase, as questions mount in Washington over the course of the confrontation with Iran.

War at the heart of the campaign
The confrontation with Iran and its impact on fuel prices have become among the top issues of the campaign. In September, Johnson said he hoped Trump’s prediction that the fighting would end after the midterms would come true.
Republicans are fighting to keep their House majority, a topic Johnson also addressed in the interview.
