A large forest fire that started yesterday evening in the Var region in southeastern France has devastated a wide area. The fire destroyed approximately 2,000 hectares of forest and rural land.
Local media sources reported that more than 150 firefighters and numerous vehicles were dispatched to the area to battle the flames. While response teams are working to bring the fire under control, 1,800 hectares have burned so far.
The Var region has frequently had to battle fires this summer. In July alone, fires in the same region damaged approximately 6,000 hectares of land.
The fire risk remains high across France. Although fires in some regions such as Gironde and Aude have been brought under control, a 'high' fire risk warning remains in effect in 36 areas nationwide.
France is experiencing one of the worst fire seasons in its history. A total of 117,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by fires this year, and four firefighters have lost their lives. Authorities have so far detained 375 people in connection with fire-related crimes.
