The Israeli strike on Syria’s Idlib region was criticized by former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon in the context of the Netanyahu government’s regional policies. Ya’alon said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had heightened tensions with Türkiye through the strike and called for his removal from office.
In a message posted on X, Ya’alon criticized Netanyahu’s airstrike against Syria. Accusing Netanyahu of keeping Israel’s military fronts open and seeking to create new ones, Ya’alon alleged that this approach was intended to evade responsibility for the October 2023 “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation.
Türkiye and Gaza
Ya’alon argued that Netanyahu was also responsible for the crisis in Israel following the strike on the military air base in Syria. Saying that the strike had heightened tensions with Türkiye, Ya’alon said Netanyahu had therefore faced a backlash from the United States.
Ya’alon claimed that Israel had missed an opportunity in Syria after the weakening of Hezbollah’s and Iran’s presence in the region. On Gaza, he alleged that U.S. President Donald Trump had imposed on Israel a 15-point document drafted by Netanyahu, along with a “Peace Council” involving Türkiye and Qatar. Ya’alon argued that this arrangement did not align with Israel’s interests.
Criticism of policies toward Lebanon and Iran
Regarding Lebanon, Ya’alon said Trump was seeking to pressure Netanyahu into accepting an agreement that could benefit Israel, while Netanyahu had avoided the deal.
On Iran, Ya’alon alleged that Netanyahu was seeking to change the government in Tehran. Saying that Netanyahu was trying to make such an achievement compensate for all his past mistakes, Ya’alon stated that this stance had caused a crisis in Netanyahu’s relationship with Trump.
Ya’alon also said Trump had accused Netanyahu of interfering in the functioning of the U.S. and global economies. He argued that Netanyahu had ignored the “red card” shown by the United States and continued his attacks.
Call for Netanyahu’s removal
Addressing Israel’s opposition leaders, Ya’alon called for intensified efforts to remove Netanyahu from office. He said this step was necessary to save the lives of civilians and soldiers and to prevent further destruction.
Israeli military aircraft had previously targeted the abandoned Abu al-Duhur air base east of Idlib province in northern Syria.
