UAE nominates State Minister Lana Nusseibeh for UN secretary-general
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan formally nominated State Minister Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for secretary-general of the United Nations. The new secretary-general is due to begin duties on January 1, 2027.
United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan formally nominated State Minister Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for secretary-general of the United Nations in a letter addressed to the presidents of the General Assembly and the Security Council, in line with procedures for selecting and appointing the secretary-general.
The Emirates News Agency reported that Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed highlighted Nusseibeh’s extensive experience in United Nations affairs and her approach to addressing current international issues.
Nusseibeh served as the UAE’s permanent representative to the United Nations from 2013 to 2024. During that period, she also served as vice president of the General Assembly and chaired the Security Council twice, in 2022 and 2023, while the UAE was a member.
The new secretary-general is scheduled to begin duties on January 1, 2027.
