Following Egypt’s decision to support Saudi Arabia, Yemeni officials said solidarity between Cairo and Riyadh was important for regional security and stability.
Egypt’s National Defense Council decided to provide Saudi Arabia with all necessary and possible support to protect its security, stability and territorial integrity. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Egyptian presidency did not provide information about the nature of the support. It also said that political and diplomatic initiatives with regional and international parties would continue and be intensified to reduce regional tensions and ensure that crises were resolved through peaceful means.
Yemen backs Egypt’s decision
Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, said Egypt’s position under Sisi’s leadership demonstrated solidarity with Saudi Arabia against common threats. Al-Alimi said the support provided by Egypt and Saudi Arabia for the Yemeni people’s efforts to restore state institutions was important for regional security and stability.
Describing Cairo and Riyadh as the two wings of Arab national security, al-Alimi said unity between the two countries would strengthen the Arab states and increase their capacity to achieve peace.
In a message to Egyptian Parliament Speaker Hisham Abdulsalam Badawi, Yemeni Parliament Speaker Sultan al-Barakani said coordination between Egypt and Saudi Arabia formed the basis for confronting regional threats and preserving stability in cooperation with Yemen, the Gulf states and other Arab countries.
Al-Barakani said the solidarity was not a temporary political choice but a strategic necessity arising from a common destiny, intertwined interests and shared threats. He praised Egypt’s position on the security of Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, as well as its efforts to protect the Red Sea and strategic waterways.
Yemeni Parliament calls for a common position
Al-Barakani called on the Egyptian Parliament to adopt a position supporting the security of Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states. Calling for threats targeting Arab countries and waterways to be rejected, al-Barakani urged support for the Yemeni people’s right to restore state institutions and end the Houthis’ control over them.
The Yemeni parliament speaker also called on Arab countries to adopt a common position supporting the Yemeni state and its institutions, contribute to the protection of civilians and reject attacks against Arab countries. Al-Barakani said efforts should be made toward a lasting peace that would guarantee Yemen’s unity and sovereignty.
On Saturday, Sisi had called Egypt’s Parliament into an extraordinary session to discuss authorizing him to defend Saudi Arabia if the country requested it.
Houthis oppose possible military involvement
Yahya al-Rai, speaker of the Houthi-affiliated Yemeni Parliament, objected to Egypt’s possible participation in a military operation against the Houthis. In a message to the Egyptian parliament speaker, al-Rai said they opposed Egypt’s military involvement in such an operation.
These developments occurred amid military tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis that have continued since July. During the period of tensions, civil aviation facilities and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia were targeted in attacks.
The war in Yemen began after the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014. The Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in March 2015 to support Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
