Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had not yet decided whether to resume negotiations with the United States.
Araghchi said Qatar and Pakistan were continuing to facilitate only the exchange of messages and communication between the parties. He said these contacts did not yet amount to negotiations.
Search for a route through the Strait of Hormuz
The Iranian minister said talks between Iran and Oman were continuing to determine a safe route for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
However, reaching an agreement on a safe route will not be the only condition for opening the strait. Araghchi said the resumption of passage and the opening of the strait would also depend on other conditions that the United States must fulfill.
The agreement and the course of the conflict
According to Araghchi, the agreement signed between Iran and the United States on June 17 called for an end to the war, not a ceasefire. Araghchi argued that the United States had violated the agreement and that fighting had resumed afterward, saying there was no ceasefire at present that needed to be extended.
The Iranian minister said the war had ended and that the process had entered a new phase.
An agreement on freedom of maritime navigation was signed between Iran and the United States on June 18, but disagreements over security in the Strait of Hormuz have prevented the process from moving forward.
The conflict that began on February 28 involved attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran, while Iran also carried out attacks against US and Israeli targets in the region. The United States then resumed its attacks against Iran from July 8 to 24, while Iran targeted US military facilities and equipment in some Arab countries.
