Most shops on Rue Neuve, one of the Belgian capital Brussels’ main shopping streets, boarded up their fronts amid fears of looting. The measure, which was limited to a few shops at the beginning of the week, spread to other shopping areas across the city as widespread calls to protest believed to have been generated by artificial intelligence circulated.
The shops hired additional security guards to work around the clock, while some brands tightened security measures at their branches in the upscale Avenue Louise and Porte de Namur areas.

Some shops were looted during demonstrations held in Brussels on October 9 and 17, including well-known sportswear and footwear stores on Rue Neuve. During the October 17 demonstration against reforms thought to raise education costs and make access to higher education more difficult, clashes broke out between police and some protesters. Police used tear gas and water cannons during the confrontations.
