In an attack off the coast of Hudaydah, Yemen, an explosive-laden boat rammed a cargo ship. The ship sank in the Red Sea following the attack.
Fayizi Nuri Avliya, spokesperson for the National Resistance Forces affiliated with the Yemeni government, said in a statement that the ship had sunk and all 14 crew members had been rescued. Avliya noted that the rescue operation was carried out jointly by the Yemeni coast guard and navy.
Thirteen of the rescued crew members are Indian nationals, and one is a Yemeni citizen. Spokesperson Avliya noted that the attacked ship belonged to India. It has not yet been announced who carried out the attack.
Iran-backed Houthis had announced last July that they were banning maritime traffic in the Red Sea. Stating that this decision was in retaliation for the blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia on Yemeni ports, the Houthis also claimed to have attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea that same month.
