Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the targeting of two tankers owned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) while they were passing through the Strait of Hormuz threatened international maritime transport.
Cairo expressed full solidarity with the United Arab Emirates following the attack. The ministry said the incident posed a serious risk to the safety of maritime transport and the freedom of navigation.
Cairo calls for maritime security
Egypt condemned in the strongest terms the targeting of two ADNOC vessels as they passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The statement said the attack endangered the freedom of navigation for ships and the safety of maritime transport in one of the international waterways.
Cairo called for an end to all actions that endanger ships and civilian facilities and put the safety of international maritime transport at risk. Egypt also called for compliance with international law, de-escalation and the preservation of regional stability.
UAE calls for Strait of Hormuz to reopen
The United Arab Emirates’ Foreign Ministry also called on Tehran to end the attacks and fully and unconditionally reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest incident was the second attack targeting ADNOC vessels in less than a week. A similar attack was carried out with a missile on August 8.
The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of carrying out the latest attack. Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have risen because of the war in the region, raising concerns about possible disruptions to maritime transport and global energy supplies.
Talks resume on safe passage
The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but the process did not advance because of disagreements over the strait’s security.
The United States resumed its attacks on Iran between July 8 and 24, while Iran targeted U.S. military facilities and equipment in Arab countries. Following these developments, talks resumed on safe-passage corridors for ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
