The Ismailia Court of Appeal’s Al-Tor Circuit, presided over by Judge Alaa Mustafa Abdel Razek, scheduled a December 29 hearing to consider a request submitted by the bishop of Saint Catherine’s Monastery in South Sinai.
The request concerns the legal dispute between the monastery and government authorities, which continued in the courts for 10 years, from the filing of the eviction lawsuit in 2015 until the Court of Appeal issued its ruling in May 2025. The reasoning for that ruling filled 146 pages in Appeals No. 228 and 226 of Judicial Year 32.

The development came after Bishop Dimitri Dimianus, who had lived through the dispute for a full decade, formally resigned as the monastery’s bishop in September 2025.
Located at the foot of Mount Moses in South Sinai, Saint Catherine’s Monastery is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
