Gaza’s Government Media Office said on September 26, the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists, that 262 journalists, including 26 women, have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023, along with 28 media activists. More than 433 media workers have been wounded, it said.
According to the office, Israel has detained 50 journalists and media workers, 23 of whom remain in custody, while the fate of three is unknown. Thirty-two journalists lost all members of their families, and the homes of 53 journalists were fully or partially destroyed.
The office put the damage to the media sector at more than $800 million, saying 143 media organizations continue to operate despite their buildings being destroyed or damaged. It urged the UN, the international community and press unions to protect Palestinian journalists and investigate violations.
