The Libyan House of Representatives’ approval of the agreement with Türkiye on the delimitation of maritime zones was welcomed by Saddam Haftar, deputy commander-in-chief of the Libyan National Army.
In a written statement, Haftar said he was pleased with the decision concerning the agreement signed in 2019.
Rights and national interests in the Mediterranean
Haftar said the approach of the eastern Libyan forces was based on protecting Libya’s national interests, sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that these principles guided relations with all countries.
Haftar described the agreement as one of the tools that could protect Libya’s rights and economic interests in the Mediterranean. Saying that Türkiye was a regionally influential actor, Haftar noted that the document could contribute to establishing common interests between the two countries.

New opportunities in relations with Türkiye
Haftar said the assembly’s approval could create new opportunities to develop bilateral relations and increase cooperation and investment, adding that a long-term partnership could be strengthened. He also said agreements could be reached on regional issues.
Haftar said he viewed relations with Türkiye as part of a broader cooperation strategy with countries in the region and the Mediterranean, emphasizing that relations with partners should be conducted in line with the principles of equality, mutual respect and good neighborliness.
Haftar reiterated his commitment to preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty and independence, defending the country’s resources and expanding its international partnerships. He added that these steps should serve Libya’s interests.
