Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakçi made an official visit to Muscat, the capital of Oman. Omani officials welcomed Arakçi at the airport.
The visit, as previously announced by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Bakayi, is a continuation of regional consultations between the two countries, particularly the talks on the Strait of Hormuz.
In the planned program, Iran's top diplomat will discuss bilateral relations and recent developments in the region with his Omani counterpart. One of the main agenda items of the talks will be making appropriate arrangements for the safe passage of ships through the strategic waterway, in accordance with Article 5 of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.
This diplomatic contact comes after weeks of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian sources claim that these tensions include US attacks on Iranian coastal positions and retaliatory operations by Iran's Revolutionary Guards against American bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.
Iran and Oman had previously agreed to coordinate on the management of the strait.
