A major funeral ceremony for a prominent figure in the Islamic world was held in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq. The ceremony in memory of Ayatollah Khamenei moved to Iraq after several days of commemoration in Iran.
Millions of Iraqis set out on a march from Kufa Bridge towards the Imam Ali Shrine, one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam. Video footage shows the vast crowds attending the ceremony.
Iraqi officials and volunteers experienced in mass pilgrimage events prepared for ceremonies also to be held in Karbala. Coordination on funeral arrangements was ensured between Iranian and Iraqi officials; Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had visited Baghdad last month for this purpose.
