Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called for national currencies to be used in trade between the two countries during a meeting with Iranian and Iraqi businesspeople at the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad.
Ghalibaf said Iran and Iraq could use their own currencies instead of the US dollar in trade, arguing that this approach would reduce the dollar's influence.
Today, we can trade using national currencies and deal a blow to the US dollar.
The Iranian Parliament speaker claimed that Iran and Iraq had not taken sufficient advantage of emerging opportunities and continued to use trade methods dating back 50 years. Ghalibaf also argued that the era of US dominance over the world had come to an end.
Assessment of Washington and Israel
Ghalibaf claimed that Washington and Israel had realized they could not defeat Iran and Iraq through conventional military warfare and had therefore turned to cognitive and economic warfare.
Rejecting claims that Iran was seeking war, Ghalibaf said people who had experienced conflict understood the value of peace better than those who merely spoke about it.
Emphasis on military preparedness for diplomacy
Ghalibaf argued that diplomatic initiatives could be effective only when backed by military preparedness.
We believe diplomacy has value and can make progress when we are prepared for war. If we are not prepared, no one will respond to us when we use diplomacy.
Ghalibaf began his visit to Iraq on Wednesday.
