Two different statements have emerged from Tehran regarding Iran’s participation in the Mecca mutual defense pact. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said the country had not received an official invitation to join the pact.
At a televised news conference on August 24, Baghaei said dialogue with Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan had been proposed on regional collective security.

A different statement from Iran’s parliament
Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian parliament’s information agency, said in remarks to Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen television that Iran had received an official invitation to join the Mecca mutual defense pact.
Terms of the Mecca pact
Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the mutual defense pact in Mecca on August 7. The document aims to strengthen joint deterrence among the three countries.
Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the parties is considered an attack against all three countries. The text also provides for enhanced military cooperation and coordination in defense, as well as the expansion of joint projects.
