Israel announced that it detected missiles launched from Iran. The Israeli military stated that the air forces are conducting operations to prevent threats and to strike targets deemed necessary.
Following this statement, the military also warned of the possibility of a new wave of missile attacks. Sirens sounded in many parts of the country, and Israel decided to close schools nationwide on Monday.
Iran Confirms the Attack
The semi-official Fars News Agency reported that Iran launched several missiles toward enemy positions but did not provide details about the targets. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards also stated that Israel must stop its attacks in southern Lebanon.
According to the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the Revolutionary Guards warned Israel about retaliation. This escalated tensions between the two sides beyond just airspace violations into a broader conflict.
Ceasefire Under Pressure
The new attack came amid ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah and difficulties in reaching a temporary agreement between Washington and Tehran. The parties have been unable to reach a compromise over the fate of frozen Iranian assets and the parallel conflict in Lebanon.
Last week saw the sharpest escalation in tensions since the ceasefire began around April 8. Israeli forces announced that they intercepted two munitions launched from Lebanon over the weekend; in response, Israel struck two apartment buildings in the southern suburbs of Beirut, resulting in two deaths and 11 injuries.
The ceasefire brokered between Israel and Lebanon, announced by the US State Department, was rejected by Hezbollah last week. These recent developments have further destabilized the fragile balance among Iran, Israel, Lebanon, and Hezbollah.
