Israel's Ministry of Health announced the recording of the first suspected case of the Ebola virus in the country. In a statement transferred to the official 'Kan' channel, the ministry reported that a suspected case had been detected in a man returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It was stated that the patient sought medical help after developing symptoms of fever and headache. The suspected case was transferred to Rambam Hospital in the northern city of Haifa and began treatment under strict isolation conditions while awaiting test results.
Outbreak Situation in Congo
According to a statement by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday, the number of confirmed cases in the outbreak that began last May in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 875, and the death toll has risen to 202.
The agency's Director General, Jean Kaseya, warned that the outbreak could deteriorate seriously if not brought under control quickly.
Global Concern
The World Health Organization (WHO) stated on May 19 that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo was 'extremely concerning'. The organization had declared a 'public health emergency of international concern' on May 17.
The Ebola virus causes a type of hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates. The virus first emerged simultaneously in 1976 in the town of Nzara, Sudan, and the town of Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo. The disease was named after the Ebola River near the village in Congo where the outbreak began.
