On the instructions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a court petition was filed to revoke the citizenship of two Palestinian citizens. The prosecution requested that Rani Auf and Shadi Aidi be stripped of their citizenship.
The two were convicted of 'conspiring to aid the enemy during wartime and leaking information to the enemy with intent to harm state security.' According to the allegations, while working at the Israeli telecom company Selcom, they prepared a plan to sabotage the company's systems in order to assist Hamas.
According to the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, the petition is considered an 'unprecedented' step. The petition is based on the Citizenship Law, which was amended in 2023. The amendment allows for the revocation of citizenship of individuals who are proven in court to have aided the 'enemy' during wartime.
According to a report by The Times of Israel, Auf and Aidi, who were arrested in 2022, were convicted in 2024. The court sentenced Auf to 11 years in prison and Aidi to 5.5 years.
The petition was filed with the Central Court at the request of Netanyahu, who also serves as interior minister, and with the approval of Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara. The lawyers of the Palestinian prisoners have not yet issued a statement.
Palestinian citizens in Israel make up about 20 percent of the population of over 10 million.
