As the demolition of Palestinian structures continues in the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces demolished Yusuf al-Rishq’s home in the Silwan area south of Jerusalem. The Jerusalem authorities said soldiers removed belongings from the house during a raid on the al-Bustan neighborhood and beat al-Rishq during the demolition.
Al-Rishq lived in the home, built in 2004, with his wife and child, as well as his parents and six siblings. Israeli authorities have reportedly sent the family demolition notices and imposed fines since 2008 on the grounds that the structure was unlicensed.
Farming and livestock structures demolished in al-Ram
Israeli forces also demolished a shed and several structures used for farming and livestock keeping in the Akbat neighborhood of the al-Ram area north of Jerusalem. The demolition was carried out on the grounds that the structures were unlicensed.
Tear-gas grenades were fired at Palestinians in the surrounding area during the raid, and some people were affected by the gas.
Farm owner Ahmed al-Julani said the demolished structures had been used to raise animals and birds. Al-Julani said the property also included a living room, a wall, a toilet and trees, adding that soldiers arrived at night without giving any warning and demolished the structures.
Permit barriers in East Jerusalem
Israeli authorities make it difficult for Palestinians to obtain building permits in occupied East Jerusalem and reject nearly all applications. This practice creates the threat of demolition for thousands of Palestinian-owned homes on the grounds that they lack permits.
Palestinians view the Jerusalem municipality’s practices as having no legal basis and as part of Israel’s policy aimed at Judaizing the city.
