Kanal 14, a broadcaster operating in Israel, reported a disagreement between Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and the political leadership over the appointment of the deputy chief of staff.
According to Kanal 14, Zamir supports appointing Major General Uri Gordin, who previously served as commander of the Northern Command, while the political leadership wants Yaniv Asor, the current commander of the Southern Command, to take the post.

Claim that Gordin’s role was expanded
Kanal 14 cited claims attributed to senior officials in Israel’s security institutions that Zamir had been making intensive efforts to strengthen Gordin’s chances of being appointed.
The claims, attributed to statements by officers at the General Staff headquarters, said that Gordin had been assigned a room near Zamir’s office at the Defense Ministry compound in Tel Aviv and had attended important meetings together with Zamir.
Kanal 14 alleged that Gordin had also been given some responsibilities currently falling within the remit of Tamir Yadai, the current deputy chief of staff.
Claim of tensions with the political leadership
Kanal 14 said Zamir was aware that the political leadership preferred Asor for the position of deputy chief of staff in the future.

According to statements from closed-door meetings cited by Kanal 14, discussions between Zamir and political officials grew heated, and tensions emerged in relations between the two sides.
It was also alleged that, if the right remained in power, the political leadership was seriously considering ending Zamir’s tenure after the parliamentary elections planned to be held in Israel. October 27 was given as the election date.
