Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a new threat to target Beirut’s southern suburbs. Katz said any rocket or drone fire targeting Israel would be met with an attack.
In his statement, Katz said Israel could expand its occupation in Lebanon toward the Nabatieh and Litani regions if Hezbollah joined an attack organized by Iran.
Threats to expand the occupation and evacuate residents
Katz announced that residents of areas newly seized by Israeli forces would be evacuated. He said these areas would be permanently incorporated into what Israel defines as a “security zone” in Lebanon.
Rejecting an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, Katz said Israeli forces would not leave the area until Hezbollah was disarmed throughout the country.
Katz’s statements on destruction and displacement
Katz claimed that Israeli forces had destroyed more than 60 villages in Lebanon containing 23,000 homes. He alleged that Hezbollah had used these settlements for military purposes.

The Israeli defense minister also claimed that a 700-square-kilometer security zone had been established inside Lebanese territory and that approximately 200,000 people had been displaced.
Military delegations meet in Tampa
Katz made the statement as Lebanese and Israeli military delegations met on Tuesday at the headquarters of U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida. The talks were held under U.S. mediation.
Israel has been carrying out attacks on Lebanon since March 2. Thousands of people have been killed or injured in the attacks, and more than 1.5 million people have been displaced.
Attacks continue despite framework agreement
Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement under U.S. auspices on June 26. The agreement provides for Israel’s gradual withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the deployment of the Lebanese army and the disarmament of Hezbollah.
However, Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon continue. Israeli forces remain in areas they have occupied for a long time, as well as in Lebanese territory seized during more recent wars and military operations.
